Physiotherapy for Fertility

Infertility can be one of the most devastating challenges for a heterosexual couple. There could be so many causes and so little is known before you put your heart and soul in having a baby. Advanced medical technologies give big promises but only have a 20-30 percent success rate, not to mention the crazy expenses involved. There is much more involved in fertility than just a mechanical transfer of a fertilized embryo.

Over the recent years the role of specialized physiotherapists is more recognized in assisting women with aspects of their fertility journey. More studies are conducted that show improved success rate of natural pregnancy using fertility massage and also Assisted Reproductive Technologies (like IVF and IUI) combined with manual physical therapy. This is not regular manual therapy. The specific techniques are developed for the purpose of promoting the mobility and function of the organs, ligaments, osseous structures, muscles, fascia, and nerves. Thus, they affect the biomechanics of the entire abdominopelvic region.

Azita Papaie is the first physiotherapist in Montreal to offer Mercier Therapy for fertility treatments.

Mercier Therapy was created by Dr. Jennifer Mercier. It is a deep pelvic organ visceral manipulative technique in which the reproductive organs are mobilized to help improve blood supply, improve lymphatic drainage, improve tissue elasticity and distensibility, mobilize the tight ligaments and break the cross links of collagen that may be present in pelvic adhesions conditions such as: endometriosis, fibroids, adhesions post pelvic or abdominal surgeries, obstructions of fallopian tubes, and biomechanical reproductive organ dysfunction.

This will enhance the natural and most optimal function of the reproductive organs. This gentle and non-invasive technique is beneficial for women of all ages facing fertility challenges.

Azita Papaie obtained her certification from the Mercier Therapy Professional Training Center in Saint Charles, Illinois.

How Does It Work?

Mercier Therapy Shared Fertility Journey can be used as a stand alone treatment or in preparation for medically assisted cycles like IUI or IVF. The program is tailored to each individual’s (couple’s) situation.

Evidence-Based Approach

Though there are a couple of scientific-based articles supporting it as a physiotherapy therapeutic intervention presently, an evidence-based research study concluded in September 2012 proved an 83% pregnancy success rate. The abstract entitled: Mercier Therapy Helps Infertile Women Achieve Pregnancy was published in the Spring 2013 edition of the Midwifery Today journal.
