Vestibular dysfunction
Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based program, designed by a specially-trained vestibular physical therapist, to improve balance and reduce problems related to dizziness.
Patients typically are diagnosed with dizziness, imbalance, vertigo, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), neck-related dizziness and migraines. The most common vestibular disorder after a concussion is BPPV.
Vertigo and dizziness are symptoms of a vestibular balance disorder. Balance disorders can strike at any age, but are most common as you get older.
Your ear is a complex system of bone and cartilage. Within it is a network of canals that are filled with fluid. The position of the fluid changes with movement. A sensor in the ear then sends the information to your brain to contribute to your sense of balance. These and other delicate pieces make up the vestibular system.
